So, looks like winter finally decided to make an appearance. And now it's cold. Damn cold. So cold that everyone living here has to be sure to have their suite thermostats set to at least 18 degrees. Why? Oh, please allow me to tell you.
See, when it gets really cold, and the heat isn't on, you run the risk of freezing your pipes. When that happens, the ice expands and cause them to burst. Not such a good thing, because that means a flood is the result.
If having ruined the place that you live isn't bad enough, here's the worst part. All the damage that occurs as a result (to the building and any other suites; whatever happens in your own is your own worry), you are responsible for. Meaning: you have to pay the bill(s) to fix everything that gets damaged. And let me tell you, that ain't cheap.
The moral, then, is: It's cold. Turn on your heater.
Can't Turn on Heat
We have our thermostat turned all the way up, but we're still sitting at 65 degrees Fahrenheit (which is uncomfortably cold). I mentioned this to Harry (?) the other morning, and he came and checked out our apartment and said that we just needed to shorten our curtains and move some furniture away from the heat register, but that there was plenty of heat otherwise. That's simply not true. It has never been this cold in our apartment, even when it has been this cold outside. And when I hold my hand up to the register there is very little heat coming off of it. I've spoken to others in the halls and on the elevators, and they have the same complaint. Are we having a building-wide heating issue again?
Heat issue
Hi: I do remember your suite & our plumbing contractor was also there that day (came for another issue) then together check your suite before we start the other project. We check your Zone Valve, T/ Stat as well as the heat register. As you know we have Pneumatic system & our Zone valves are NORMALLY OPEN ( in this case if your valve was faulty we would have replaced it right away (b/t there was hot water flow) as well as your T/Stat was working or bleed ok ) however; simply cold air go through the registers & warm air rises (cold air sinks and hot air rises). If there is any restriction (blockage) it will limit the efficiency of heat you get.
If this issue continue please let us know ( go to the office or call the office to make work order/permission to enter) & we will gladly assist you. I will again personally pay attention to this specific issue.

Zone Valve
I have not been informed of a building-wide heating issue, and the heat in my suite is working properly. So, since all the heat comes from the same boiler system, I don't think it's an issue with the entire system.
What you can do is this: Pull off the register in your living room and check the zone valve (which register is dependent on which suite you live in; where they are varies depending on where each suite is situated in the building, but it will likely be found next to the wall that leads to your next door neighbour). You'll know you've found it because you'll see a hose running towards your thermostat. If you touch the cylinder and it's hot (because you have the heat on), it's working properly. If you have the heat on and it's cold, the valve needs to be fixed/replaced.
That said, Harry is pretty wise. If he told you to move/change things around (even if they were like that last year or beyond), you should try it. There may be more to the situation than what has yet been discovered, but even if Harry's suggestion doesn't entirely solve the problem, I expect it will help (somewhat). He's usually on the ball with this kind of stuff, so I'd trust his judgement and give it a try. It certainly can't hurt.
